When a child is born, what is the first question we ask? This shows the importance we place on gender right at the start of a child’s life, and this can determine their path for their future. In real terms, gender inequality is a major problem locally, nationally and globally. Not only does it affect the lives of individual men and women, but inequality also slows economic growth and hinders development. The unequal social relationships between women and men results in less effective policies, institutions and processes, and it means many people are left unable to reach their potential and are left out of making decisions and contributing to social change. Gender equality is the cornerstone of a flourishing society, not merely a matter of fairness. Empowering all individuals, irrespective of gender, leads to more robust economies, healthier communities, and a more secure global environment.
Gender equality gives people the freedom to reject damaging stereotypes and follow their aspirations regardless of what society thinks of them. It creates an atmosphere where everyone is treated with safety, respect, and value and where a variety of skills and viewpoints spur creativity and advancement. We create the conditions for future generations to have better futures by embracing gender equality. Certain areas of gender equality have improved as a result of international commitments: female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage have decreased recently, and women now make up a larger percentage of the political sphere than they have ever held. However, the dream of a society where all women and girls experience complete gender equality and where all societal, legal, and financial constraints on their empowerment are eliminated still lies unrealized. Given how hard the COVID-19 pandemic is hitting women and girls, it’s likely even farther off than it was before.
In conclusion, gender equality will greatly benefit us if it occurs in our community. Gender equality not only improves the health of our society overall but also has significant and positive effects on GDP per capita over time. I’ve always hoped that gender equality would come about quickly so that everyone could live in a world free from gender norms, the disparity in pay between sexes, domestic abuse, and other issues.
